heart pastries

As a special gift for your loved one or to enjoy by yourself, these heart pastries will make a perfect present for when you want to show your love!

Have a go at making these super quick and easy pastries baked with love.

For this curious recipe, we have focused on the sweet plum and vanilla custard version, however if you’re looking for something more savoury we have also tried beetroot and goats cheese as an alternative.

Making time: 35 mins

Ingredients:

  • vanilla custard or goats cheese

  • plums or beetroot

  • 1 medium egg

  • puff pastry sheet

(substitute custard and plums for goats cheese and beetroot if making savoury version)

Method:

Before we start on our curious pastries, preheat your oven to 200 degrees Celsius.

Then you are going to prepare your plums (or beetroot) by cutting them into hearts, make sure they aren’t too big otherwise they won’t fit in your pastry. Then place them to the side,

After that, you will need to cut your sheet of puff pastry into the size you want for your treats. I chose to cut them into 10 however you can choose to do as many as you want, just make sure your heart plums are the right size.

Once you have chosen your size, grab your custard and spread a thin layer in the centre of your pastry (or place a thin layer of goats cheese), making sure not to place too much or the pastries will leak when cooking.

Now is the time to assemble your pastries! Fold the edges of the pastry over and place your plums (or beetroot) in the middle on top of the custard (or goats cheese). Once these have been made you can egg wash the pastry, this will make them a nice golden brown when they come out the oven.

Place your pastries in the pre-heated oven for 20 minutes and there you have it, delicious heart shaped pastries to show your love for that special someone!
